Penn State's season starts with a Marshall Thundering Herd squad that is one of the more underrated Group of 6 programs. Penn State is a big home favorite against Marshall, but the Thundering Herd do have some players who could make some plays. That includes cornerback Derwin "Boogie" Trotter.
Boogie Trotter was originally expected to leave for the NFL after participating in Marshall's pro day, but Thundering Herd fans should be grateful for his return. Not only was he one of the best corners in the Group of 6, but also in the entire nation. In fact, his 2 interceptions returned for a touchdown tied for first in the entire FBS. He also recorded 74 tackles, 10 passes defended, and added a tackle for loss. He had 5 interceptions in all, which added to his already
impressive First Team All-Sun Belt performance. What is even more impressive is that he was a transfer from FCS Tennessee State.
Now, he will face perhaps Marshall's toughest opponent in his time with the team. He may actually have the unique advantage of understanding his role. While the Penn State receivers are somewhat new to each other, the Marshall defense will be able to exploit any miscommunication between quarterback Rocco Becht and his wideouts. Look for Trotter to be matched up against either Brett Eskildsen or Koby Howard, allowing safeties to defend the box in the run game.
This also means that Trotter will often be isolated, with an opportunity to showcase his elite ball skills in the air. This could force Becht to be as accurate as possible in his first game at the helm of the Blue and White.
For Trotter, it will be a true test of his resume as he looks to show off his potential against a Power 4 foe.
