Now that the college football season has reached November, it is now time for the College Football Playoff selection committee to begin its work. That starts on the first Tuesday of the month with the initial release of the selection committee's official top 25 ranking, which will give fans across the country the first glimpse at how this playoff race is truly setting up.
The selection committee will release its initial ranking Tuesday evening in the first weekly release show of the season. If there is one thing we have learned in previous years with these rankings, it is that the first ranking tends to offer a different outlook on the current season than the traditional polls... sometimes.
The selection committee stresses the idea that the decisions
made with the rankings is based significantly on data points that have been created since the start of the season. Injuries also come into the discussion, which could be detrimental for a team like Ohio State (coming off its second loss of the year and dealing with a long-term injury to starting quarterback Julian Sayin). And each week, the committee starts from scratch, adding in the latest data points from the previous weekend's slate of games. And with a big weekend upcoming, next week's playoff rankings could look significantly different than the initial rankings being revealed tonight.
So when the rankings are released tonight, there will be plenty of debates and conversations over something that ultimately will not matter with a month of the season remaining. But it is important to understand the committee's line of thinking.
