Former Penn State quarterback and recent third round draft pick Drew Allar just received some positive news about his immediate NFL future. Whether the good news continues to come remains to be seen. For now, Allar is officially a member of thePittsburgh Steelers' 53 man roster. While he is only on the practice squad, it is a solid sign of of progress in Allar's journey.
What is unusual is that the Steelers have 4 quarterbacks on their roster, with bothWill Howard and Mason Rudolph making it behind Allar as well. When you compare Howard's and Allar's preseason performances, very little separates them besides a couple of mistakes from Howard, who used to be Allar's Big Ten counterpart. "Howard's preseason was a mixed bag of results. While he was much
more accurate than Allar, he also threw more touchdowns than interceptions, was sacked more often and had a lower passer rating," CBS' Bryan DeArdo wrote of the situation.
With Rudolph firmly in the mix as well, it's safe to say he will slot in to the QB2 role behind Aaron Rodgers mainly due to his experience. Still, the Steelers also seem to be focused on developing a youth prospect, which could lean more towards Allar potentially earning the role. The best case scenario though stems from learnind under one of the greats and a QB2 who has had the experience of playing in Pittsburgh as well and becoming a bit of a cult favorite.
For Allar, the future seems bright as after a difficult college career was cut short by a brutal injury, many thought he would not be given the chance to find a roster spot in the NFL. However, now that he has found one, Steelers fans are truly starting to believe that the kid who played just a few hours outside of Pittsburgh can continue to make them contenders for years to come.
