After getting a much-needed week off, Penn State will be back in Big Ten action at home in Week 9. The Nittany Lions host Purdue to begin the final stretch run in the regular season, and they will be looking to snap out of a funk. Penn State has dropped four consecutive games, coinciding with the start of Big Ten play, and the pressure is building for first-year head coach Matt Campbell and quarterback Rocco Becht, with bowl hopes beginning to come into question.
Purdue will not be a pushover for the Nittany Lions. Purdue has taken some steps forward this season and the Boilermakers have already picked up a pair of wins in Big Ten play for the first time since 2023. Purdue's offense has put together some good outings this season, and Penn State's
defense has been picked apart by competent offenses a couple of times this season. Can Penn State avoid coming up on the wrong end of an upset this week at home against the Boilermakers?
Here is a look at the updated betting odds, trends, and more for today's contest between Penn State and Purdue.

Purdue has come out ahead of the curve against the spread when playing as an underdog this season, including its most recent win as an underdog against Minnesota. The Boilermakers were a 2.5-point underdog against the Gophers but won outright in decisive fashion in a surprising blowout victory in Big Ten play a few weeks back.
Penn State came up short against the spread in four consecutive games before beating the spread in a losing effort two weeks ago at Michigan. Penn State is being favored by double digits for the fourth time this season, and the Nittany Lions are 2-1 ATS when favored by at least 10 points this season (Penn State was favored by at least 23 points in non-conference matchups against Marshall, Temple, and Buffalo in the first three games of the season). Penn State is 2-0 ATS at home when favored by double digits this season.
Purdue games have hit the over 6 times this season while Penn State games have gone over just 3 times so far this season. Purdue's last two games have gone over while Penn State games have gone under the point total in each of the past two games.
Four of the past five meetings between Penn State and Purdue have gone over the point total dating back to 2013. Since 1998, Penn State vs. Purdue games in Beaver Stadium have gone under the point total in 6 times in 8 games (with 1 game being a push).
Penn State vs. Purdue predictions, picks for college football Week 9
It may be bad advice to bet anything with much confidence with Penn State right now. The point spread feels a bit overconfident in Penn State's ability to put Purdue away this week. Given the talent level of Purdue's offense this season, and how poorly Penn State's defense has played at times, taking Penn State to cover a 10-point spread feels like bad advice. This is why I went on record saying Penn State will end its losing streak this week, but it will not come easily.
