With so many teams in the FBS — 138 in total — ranking all of them seems like an impossible task. Luckily, USA TODAY’s Paul Myerberg was crazy enough to do it, even including a record prediction for every team listed.
People have seemingly reached a consensus on the range in which Penn State ranks in the nation. Most lists have had the school in the 15-20 range, and Myerberg’s was no different, with the Nittany Lions landing at No. 17.
This is a slight improvement from the team’s AP Poll ranking, which came in at No. 18, but the win-loss prediction is where things get wacky. Myerberg has Penn State going 7-6 this season, with LSU and Clemson being the only other schools in the top 35 with seven wins or fewer.
Ultimately, being so high on the list
is a win for the Blue and White, but it’s hard to understand how they get up to that spot with just seven wins. Strength of schedule surely cant be a factor since Penn State’s falls on the easier side, and it isn’t based off of last season because we all know how that went in State College.
Overall, this placement is about in line with where the Nittany Lions have been ranked over the last month or so — the path to getting there is just a little confusing. Hopefully the Selection Committee will be just as lenient with their rankings compared to schedule when they’re setting the College Football Playoff field.
