For the new look Nittany Lions, any win they can get on the board no matter what before the meat of their Big Ten schedule, the better. Still, they also understand that style points do matter. That's why some thought Penn State didn't look wholly complete against Temple on the road.
While it was a 27-9 win that Penn State pulled out comfortably in the second half, some fans were concerned with the start. However, postgame comments from quarterback Rocco Becht, who has more than been around the block, should reassure them all.
“It’s our first road game as a team,” Becht said. “We came out hot; we just weren’t able to execute in the red zone, and we made adjustments after the first quarter and at halftime. We were able to come back and rally around
one another to be better than that first quarter.”
In fact, had Penn State scored on their first two drives, one in which kicker Ryan Barker missed a field goal, the score probably would have flattered them much more.
For many fans, they probably wanted to see a cleaner performance, but through two games, there's been nothing to dissuade them from believing that with the nation's most experienced QB at the helm, they can't go at the very least 10-2 considering a highly manageable conference schedule. So far, Rocco Becht's efficiency as a passer has papered over some concerns for the team, especially in the run game. Considering the amount of heavy personnel the blue and white runs, you would expect better output from the running game. That hasn't been the case, but as long as Becht looks this good, he can keep this up.
With no true major challenges ahead just yet, it's safe to say the jury will be out on this team for a little while. However, there's no need to panic after two solid wins for Nittany Lions fans.
