Penn State had been trending slowly up the rankings after the first few weeks of the season, but a gut-wrenching loss at home in Week 4 brought an end to that climb. Instead, the Nittany Lions took a bit of a stumble in this week's updated US LBM Coaches Poll.
Penn State moved up one spot to No. 14 a week ago and started the season ranked No. 17 in the preseason coaches poll. But after a loss to Wisconsin, Penn State is now ranked No. 22 in this week's US LBM Coaches Poll.
No. 5 Indiana is the highest-ranked Big Ten team in this week's US LBM Coaches Poll. Other Big Ten teams in the coaches poll this week include No. 6 Ohio State, No. 14 Iowa, No. 15 Oregon, No. 18 USC, No. 23 UCLA, and No. 24 Michigan. Washington fell out of the rankings following
a home loss this week.
Texas remains the top-ranked team in the coaches poll with 45 first-place votes. The Longhorns are followed by No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Notre Dame, and No. 4 Miami before the Big Ten combo of Indiana and Ohio State.
Penn State fell out of this week's Super 16 poll from the FWAA and National Football Foundation.
Penn State will look to get back in the win column on a short week. The Nittany Lions travel to Northwestern for a Friday night matchup that will feature the grand opening of Northwestern's new and improved Ryan Field on national TV. Northwestern is coming off a close loss on the road against Indiana, suggesting Penn State will have its hands full as they look to rebound.
