The AP Poll and US LBM Coaches Poll will both be released on Tuesday as college football's Week 1 wraps up on Monday night. When the poll drops, LSU football should be the No. 1-ranked team in the sport.
Now, I don't think LSU will be ranked No. 1, but it should be. LSU's 51-10 throttling of Clemson should be rewarded. Isn't the point of the poll to reward what happens on the field?
LSU began the year ranked outside the top 10 in both polls. That was fair given the questions surrounding a transfer-laden team, but LSU put many of those concerns to rest on Saturday night. If LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt is healthy and playing as he did vs. Clemson, few teams can beat LSU.
LSU's defense confirmed what we already know -- the unit is elite. LSU's defense was
projected to be a top-five unit, according to SP+, and the group looked the part. LSU has NFL talent on all three levels of the defense.
I understand LSU was at home and Clemson was unranked. This wasn't a signature win from a resume standpoint, but Clemson is a Power Four team with a handful of future pros, and LSU made Dabo Swinney's group look like a Sun Belt team.
LSU will jump into the top five if I had to guess, but voters should reward LSU's performance and slot the Tigers No. 1.
