After an inconsistent early season, LSU football QB Sam Leavitt is emerging as one of the best in the SEC. The Arizona State transfer played the cleanest game of his LSU career in Week 7, completing 31/38 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns. Leavitt led LSU to a 31-0 win over Mississippi State.
According to PFF, Leavitt's is the top-graded passer in the SEC with a 90.7 mark. Leavitt's big-time throw-to-turnover-worthy play ratio of 4.00 leads the conference, and Leavitt's adjusted completion rate of 80% ranks No. 3 in the conference.
Leavitt looked unsettled early in the year. He would scramble and make plays with his legs, but now he's become a complete player at QB. The run game is still a factor, but Leavitt looks comfortable running the offense
from the pocket. Leavitt has made these strides without the safety blanket of star LSU tight end Trey'Dez Green, too.
Talent was never a question. There's a reason why LSU spent money to land the top-ranked quarterback in the portal. But Leavitt was coming off an injury and had to learn a new offense with a completely new personnel group. There was always going to be a learning curve.
Most of Leavitt's interceptions haven't been his fault, and that's why his turnover-worthy play rate is one of the best in the SEC. Still, as Leavitt continues to get more comfortable, the turnover number should decrease further.
Look for the LSU QB to have a massive second half in Lane Kiffin's offense.
