LSU football resumes conference play this weekend, hitting the road to face the Kentucky Wildcats. Winning road games in the SEC is hard. If LSU can take care of business in Lexington, Lane Kiffin and Co. have a chance at a statement win.
Kentucky has momentum. Under first-year head coach Will Stein, the Wildcats are 4-1 and already have two SEC wins. Kentucky is coming off an overtime win over South Carolina and an upset of Texas A&M on the road last month. Kentucky also put up a fight vs. Alabama in the first half, even if the Crimson Tide pulled away in the second. This team has some bite.
The last time Kiffin faced Kentucky was in 2024—the Wildcats upset a talented Ole Miss team in Oxford. Looking back on it, that loss probably was the difference
between Ole Miss missing or making the College Football Playoff.
If LSU earns a decisive win this week, it won't be at the top of LSU's resume, but it will be a significant step in building a playoff case. The Tigers are a 10-point favorite, and if LSU wins by double digits, the sport will notice. In this era of college football, where teams are as inconsistent as ever, beating conference teams on the road means something.
Look what Alabama did to Mississippi State last week. The Crimson Tide traveled to Starkville to face an upstart Mississippi State team. The Crimson Tide made quick work of the Bulldogs, scoring 56 points. That won't be Alabama's signature win, but it gives a real boost to strength-of-record metrics that matter to the CFP committee.
LSU faces a similar situation this week. LSU can't afford a loss; that's obvious. But even a close win would raise some questions about LSU entering the back half of the season. A blowout win, however, would leave no doubt that this LSU team is a playoff contender.
