LSU women's basketball made roster changes to find its point guard for the upcoming 2026-27 season. Head coach Kim Mulkey utilized the transfer portal to build out the position after an unexpected departure in the spring.
Jada Richard held the starting point guard role last season. The rising junior transferred to Ole Miss, leaving the position vacant. The Tigers struggled to establish a true point guard throughout the past few years of Mulkey's tenure. Mulkey, who played point guard at Louisiana Tech, often discusses the importance of having a quarterback who knows her system.
Khayla Pointer played point guard during Mulkey's first year, earning All-American and first-team All-SEC honors. Alexis Morris held the role during the Tigers' national
championship year, helping solidify them as one of the premier programs in the country.
Mulkey added Louisville transfer Hailey Van Lith to play point guard for the 2023-24 season, but she transferred to TCU one year later. The Tigers took a by-committee approach during the 2024-25 season, rotating between Shayeann Day-Wilson and Last-Tear Poa, but neither emerged as a true playmaker.
Here are the starters and reserves who could see minutes at point guard for LSU.
Starter: Jada Williams
Williams was recruited to slide right into the starting one spot for the Tigers. The senior brings a proven track record of success at the Power Four level as a first-team All-Big 12 selection at Iowa State last year, when she averaged 15.3 points, 7.7 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game. Williams' adept play helped former Cyclones center Audi Crooks average the second-most points per game in the country last year.
The 5-foot-8 guard has 90 starts over three years between Arizona and Iowa State. Williams ranked inside the national top five last year in total assists and assists per game. Her creativity will elevate the perimeter play of MiLaysia Fulwiley and Mikaylah Williams while also giving an inexperienced frontcourt a dependable passer.
Backup: MiLaysia Fulwiley
Fulwiley enters her second year with the Tigers after winning her second straight SEC Sixth Woman of the Year award. She will start at shooting guard but get reps at point guard behind Jada Williams. Mulkey said plenty of times during the 2025-26 season that learning to play the position would only elevate her game.
Along with improving her play on defense and in transition, Fulwiley took a step forward in her first season with LSU as an overall playmaker. With one year in Mulkey's system under her belt, she makes a formidable backup to Jada Williams at the point.
Reserves: Chloe Larry, Lola Lampley
Injuries affected the perimeter rotation two years ago, testing LSU's depth at every level. The purple and gold managed well since it had reliable scorers like Mikaylah Williams and Flau'jae Johnson, but the true one spot was always a question mark.
Larry and Lampley would likely be the first guards called upon to run the point if Jada Williams or Fulwiley is unavailable. Larry established herself as a scorer through two seasons at Tennessee Tech and enters her junior year bringing plenty of experience.
Though her primary focus lies on getting up to the strength and speed needed to play in the SEC, Lampley could earn more minutes by knowing Mulkey's playbook and setting up proven scoring threats in Mikaylah Williams and Fulwiley.
