After a Week 2 win vs. Louisiana Tech, LSU football ranked No. 8 in ESPN's latest SP+ rankings. SP+ ranks LSU's offense No. 13 nationally while the defense sits at No. 2.
For those unfamiliar, SP+ is a predictive power-rating model.
"It is simply a measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football. If you're lucky or unimpressive in a win, your rating will probably fall. If you're strong and unlucky in a loss, it will probably rise," is how the model's creator, Bill Connelly, describes it.
At No. 2 in college football, LSU's defense is the top-rated defense in the SEC. Ohio State is the only defense ahead of LSU.
LSU's top-15 offense is a positive sign, too. LSU's offense struggled throughout 2025 and fixing the unit was a top priority
for head coach Lane Kiffin. LSU has surpassed 500 total yards in each of its first two games.
Meanwhile, the LSU defense has held opponents to a combined 285 yards through the first two weeks.
But LSU has its toughest test yet in Week 3. The Tigers travel to face Ole Miss as Lane Kiffin makes his return to Oxford.
