LSU football linebacker TJ Dottery is enjoying an All-SEC-caliber season. The Ole Miss transfer came to LSU with high expectations, and he's only exceeded them thus far.
According to PFF, Dottery owns the second-best defensive grade among qualified SEC linebackers. The only player with a better grade is Georgia's Chris Cole, who is in the midst of an All-American season.
Within that group, Dottery's run-stop rate ranks in the 84th percentile, and his tackling grade in the 87th percentile. Dottery's pass coverage grade, along with his pass-rushing marks, ranks near the top of the SEC linebacker leaderboard.
Dottery brought a wealth of experience to LSU after he was a member of Ole Miss' College Football Playoff defense last year. LSU needed that
veteran presence as Lane Kiffin took over the program. Dottery was with Kiffin at Ole Miss, and it helps when players who are familiar with a coach can take on a leadership role.
As far as on the field, Dottery has given the Tigers exactly what they need. LSU DC Blake Baker runs a versatile scheme, which has proven to be a good fit for Dottery. Dottery can use his athleticism in a multitude of roles.
When LSU lost star linebacker Whit Weeks for an extended period, Dottery faced more pressure as he took on Weeks' role. Dottery has responded and continues to play well. The senior linebacker has a chance to cement All-SEC status with a massive second half.
LSU hits the road to play Auburn this Saturday before the Tigers get a much-needed bye next week.
