Five weeks of SEC football are in the books. We're almost at the halfway point of the season—hard to believe. Week 5 was one for the SEC's cream of the crop, reminding us why they're the cream of the crop. Alabama logged an emphatic win over Mississippi State, scoring 56 points on the road and Georgia handled Vanderbilt with ease in Athens.
Meanwhile, Arch Manning and Texas had the weekend off while LSU made quick work of FCS opponent McNeese.
Week 6 is a big one. Georgia and Alabama are slated to meet in Tuscaloosa in what has become the SEC's premier box-office matchup in the last decade. Even as Nick Saban gave way to Kalen DeBoer at Alabama, this game always provides.
The winner will have a clear path to the College Football Playoff, while
the loser has less margin for error down the stretch. A few weeks ago, Georgia was considered the favorite. But the emergence of Alabama QB Keelon Russell has changed the picture. With Russell playing at a Heisman level, Alabama looks like it can beat anyone in the country.
Anyways, it's time for some SEC power rankings.
16. Arkansas Razorbacks (2-3)
Week 5: Lost 34-7 at Texas A&MWeek 6: vs. Tennessee
Arkansas's misery continued in Week 5. The Razorbacks suffered a 34-7 loss at Texas A&M. The same Texas A&M that was reeling after dropping back-to-back SEC games. If you're a struggling SEC team like A&M, facing Arkansas seems to be pretty good medicine. There's not much nice to say about this Razorbacks team. The defense can't stop the run, struggles on third down, and struggles in the red zone.
The offense is even worse, ranking 117th in yards/play and 116th in explosive play rate. It'll be a long day for the Razorbacks offense vs. Tennessee's defense.
15. South Carolina Gamecocks (2-3)
Week 5: Lost 35-34 vs. KentuckyWeek 6: at Florida
Arkansas was an easy pick for No. 16, but South Carolina is doing its best to make their case, too. The Gamecocks controlled the first half against Kentucky and looked to be on the verge of an SEC win, but the Wildcats came back to win in overtime. The vibes around this program aren't great -- Shane Beamer is coaching for his job and defensive end Dylan Stewart remains suspended indefinitely.
The Gamecocks travel to Florida in Week 6, where they're nearly two-touchdown underdogs vs. the Gators.
14. Vanderbilt Commodores (3-2)
Week 5: Lost 38-14 at GeorgiaWeek 6: vs. Ole Miss
Vanderbilt took a trip to Athens in Week 5. The Commodores got the usual treatment visitors receive in Kirby Smart's house, with Georgia logging a 38-14 blowout. Vanderbilt remains well-coached, but the Commodores' offense isn't the scary unit it was last year. True freshman Jared Curtis, who missed the Georgia game with an injury, has promise. The goal for Vandy this year is do just enough to give Lea's squad something to build on with Curtis returning in 2027.
13. Kentucky Wildcats (4-1)
Week 5: Won 35-34 at South CarolinaWeek 6: vs. LSU
I know, Kentucky is 4-1 and 2-1 in the SEC. Placing the Wildcats at No. 13 comes off as a slight. But Kentucky needed overtime to beat a mediocre South Carolina team and warning signs persist. Kentucky's offensive line and run game are decent, but the unit has few answers when it gets to third and long. Kentucky ranks 132nd in third-down conversion rate vs. FBS opponents and QB Kenny Minchey has a tendency to take sacks when pressured.
On defense, Kentucky is a poor tackling team and has looked average vs. the South Carolina and South Alabama offenses. Kentucky will get a chance to prove something this week as LSU comes to town.
12. Auburn Tigers (3-2)
Week 5: Lost 24-14 at TennesseeWeek 6: Bye
Auburn led Tennessee 7-3 at halftime in Week 5, but couldn't turn it into an SEC road win. Tennessee's defense took over in the second half, shutting down Auburn QB Byrum Brown. The Auburn passing game finished with just 4.8 yards per attempt. On defense, Tennessee's run game wore down the Auburn defenders, allowing the Vols to pull away.
Auburn looked like a team with some talented pieces, but didn't have the quarterback or the quality depth to hang around vs a good SEC team. Auburn may be sneaky enough to upset someone in the back half of the schedule, but for now, Alex Golesh's squad isn't a top-10 SEC team.
11. Texas A&M Aggies (3-2)
Week 5: Won 34-7 vs. ArkansasWeek 6: at Missouri
Texas A&M got back in the win column with a 34-7 victory over Arkansas, but that won't do much to correct the vibes after A&M began the year with CFP hopes, only to leave September with two losses. A&M's home loss to Kentucky, followed by its road loss at LSU, told us what we needed to know about this team. A&M lost significant production from last year's CFP team and the transfer portal additions weren't enough to make up for it.
10. Oklahoma Sooners (2-2)
Week 5: ByeWeek 6: vs. Texas (neutral site)
Oklahoma's offense is sputtering. Last time we saw the Sooners was Week 4, when Oklahoma was blown out by Georgia. Oklahoma had CFP expectations entering the year, but that's out of the picture now. Questions linger across the offense, from QB John Mateer to the offensive line. The defense is elite (again), but it won't be enough to make up for the lack of points. Oklahoma heads to Dallas for Red River this week. Perhaps the Sooners can turn their season around by upsetting Texas. Don't hold your breath, though.
9. Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-1)
Week 5: Lost 56-23 vs. AlabamaWeek 6: Bye
Mississippi State fans were eager to watch the Bulldogs host Alabama in Week 5. There was a newfound excitement around the program with quarterback KaMario Taylor leading the way. College Football Playoff talk was in the air. Alabama quieted that energy with a 56-23 win in Starkville. Taylor and the offense did some nice things, and this team has playmakers, but the defense didn't look ready to defend a top-tier SEC offense.
Mississippi State gets a bye week to prepare for its Week 7 trip to LSU. The bye week is much needed after Taylor left the Alabama game with an injury.
8. Tennessee Volunteers (4-1)
Week 5: Won 24-14 vs. AuburnWeek 6: at Arkansas
Tennessee's defense is one of the best in the SEC. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles is making an impact ik Knoxville. Defensive lineman Tyree Weathersby and Xaiver Gilliam both rank top 10 in the SEC in pressures. Penn State transfer Dejuan Lane is emerging as an All-SEC safety, too.
On offense, the Vols' physical and consistent run game has the ability to wear down defenses. Tennessee RB DeSean Bishop ranks No. 3 in the SEC with 540 rushing yards.
7. Florida Gators (4-1)
Week 5: Lost 45-17 at MissouriWeek 6: vs. South Carolina
Florida was on the up after a Week 4 upset of Ole Miss. Jon Sumrall's Gators were the darlings of the sport. Then Florida traveled to Missouri. Eli Drinkwitz and the Tigers used Florida to make a statement win. The Florida defense let Missouri do whatever it wanted. Missouri QB Austin Simmons carved up the Florida secondary. Florida's defense held vs. the run for three quarters, but the dam broke in the fourth.
Florida is a good team, but it's Sumrall's first year leading the program. First-year coaches don't build consistent rosters. There will be ups and downs. Florida remains in the playoff race if the Gators can avoid being upset the rest of the way.
6. Missouri Tigers (4-1)
Week 5: Won 45-17 vs. FloridaWeek 6: vs. Texas A&M
Missouri rises after logging a 45-17 win vs. Florida. QB Austin Simmons played the best game of his career, completing 23 passes for 340 yards and two scores. Simmons completed 76.7% of his passes while averaging over 11 yards per attempt. That's as efficient as it gets.
The Florida win was big for the Missouri program. Despite the high floor, Drinkwitz and the Tigers had struggled against ranked SEC teams. Florida isn't Alabama or Georgia, but Missouri proved something with how decisive this victory was.
5. Ole Miss Rebels (3-1)
Week 5: ByeWeek 6: at Vanderbilt
Last time out, Ole Miss was upset. The Rebels were coming off an emotional win over LSU, and Florida seized the opportunity. The Rebels' defense looked rough in that loss, but Pete Golding had a bye week to clean things up. Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss is one of the best in the country, and for now, Chambliss is too good to say Ole Miss doesn't deserve a spot in the top five of these rankings. Also, the win over LSU was impressive.
4. LSU Tigers (4-1)
Week 5: Won 63-14 vs. McNeeseWeek 6: at Kentucky
Ole Miss beat LSU in Week 3, but I think LSU would win that game on a neutral field. At 4-1, LSU remains in the national title hunt. QB Sam Leavitt is settling into the offense, and the defense is one of college football's best. LSU should only improve as the season progresses and the roster gets healthier. LSU has top end talent on both sides of the ball and can compete with anyone in the country.
3. Texas Longhorns (4-0)
Week 5: ByeWeek 6: vs. Oklahoma (neutral site)
Putting Texas here was a tough choice. The Longhorns are No. 1 in the AP Poll and have a signature win over Ohio State, but Texas looks a little less complete than SEC peers Georgia and Alabama. The offense will put together an amazing drive only to go three-and-out on its next possession. The defense, however, looks phenomenal. Texas remains a national championship contender.
2. Georgia Bulldogs (5-0)
Week 5: Won 38-14 vs. VanderbiltWeek 6: at Alabama
Georgia fans won't like the No. 2 ranking, but the Dawgs get a chance to change that at Alabama this week. Georgia has done everything one would expect it do vs. inferior competition, but Kirby Smart's squad is yet to be tested.
QB Gunner Stockton operates the offense with efficiency and the defense is the best it's been since Georgia's national championship team in 2022.
1. Alabama Crimson Tide (5-0)
Week 5: Won 56-23 at Mississippi StateWeek 6: vs. Georgia
Keelon Russell. The Alabama quarterback is playing lights-out. He's only a redshirt freshman, but Russell looks like a seasoned veteran. This Alabama offense is rolling right now. The Crimson Tide heard talk of an upset in Starkville last week and responded with a 56-23 win over a ranked SEC team.
The defense is probably the best of the Kalen DeBoer era, too.
