Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young was reportedly at the center of a "heated scuffle" at Carolina Panthers training camp on Monday.
USA TODAY Sports' Jack McKessy, citing multiple reports, said Tuesday of the skirmish:
"The fight broke out after a live team period rep between the first-team offense and first-team defense, when Panthers safeties Lathan Ransom and Nick Scott reportedly laid a hard hit on running back Jonathon Brooks.
"Young 'started jawing' at the defense after the hit, which led to the scuffle that involved multiple offensive linemen and defensive back Mike Jackson."
Panthers head coach Dave Canales downplayed the skirmish afterwards.
"We had a little bit of a scuffle out there, and the response afterwards was more
physicality," Canales told reporters. "That's exactly where we should be. We've got to tiptoe that line where we're in pads. We've got to play football. That's the bottom line. But there are some situations where we could be smarter and take care of each other, so I think that's what the frustration was ultimately about."
Canales added:
"I'm all for it. I talked to the defensive guys. Like, 'Don’t back off on that. Let's just see where our wideouts, receivers, et cetera, where they're at in those situations. If they can't see you, thud 'em up and hold 'em up. If they can see you, I want it to be like football other than just, we're not going to the legs.' So, some teachable moments on both sides, really."
Young is entering his fourth NFL season in 2026. He was the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by Carolina after winning the Heisman Trophy as a first-year starter at Alabama in 2021.
Young is coming off his best season, throwing for 3,011 yards and 23 touchdowns while completing 63.6 percent of his passes, all career highs. He also rushed for 216 yards and two touchdowns while guiding the Panthers to the NFC South division championship.
A consensus five-star recruit in the class of 2020 out of Mater Dei High School in southern California, Young threw for 4,872 yards and 47 touchdowns to seven interceptions during his 2021 Heisman Trophy season.
In two seasons as a starter for Nick Saban, Young threw for 8,200 yards and 79 touchdowns while rushing for 185 yards and seven scores.
Young didn't play in the Panthers' preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals at the Hall of Fame Game last Thursday in Canton, Ohio.
Carolina's next preseason game is Saturday against the Buffalo Bills. The Panthers open the regular season against the Chicago Bears at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on Sept. 13 at noon CT. The game will be televised regionally on Fox.
