LSU football coach Lane Kiffin's psychology ploy to get inside an opponent's head didn't work against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Prior to the SEC rivals' high-stakes Week 10 showdown in Baton Rouge, Alabama arrived at Tiger Stadium to find an unusual sight that differed from the Crimson Tide's past trips to Baton Rouge over the years. The visiting team's locker room had been painted pink.
To be clear, it's not something Kiffin had been saving just for Alabama. LSU had the visiting team's locker room walls painted pink ahead of the Tigers' Week 4 game against Texas A&M on Sept. 26. When LSU hosted Mississippi State on Oct. 17, the entire visitor's locker room -- benches, chairs, etc. -- had been painted pink.
Too bad for Kiffin that Alabama isn't
Mississippi State or Texas A&M.
The Crimson Tide (7-2 ,5-2 SEC) jumped out to a 10-3 lead at halftime and trailed for only two minutes and eight seconds on the game clock in a 31-13 win over the Tigers.
Keelon Russell erupted with three touchdown passes in a span of four Alabama drives to put the Tide in command and LSU's College Football Playoff hopes on life support.
Kiffin borrowed the pink locker rooms trick from the late Iowa Hawkeyes coaching legend Hayden Fry, who started the tradition in 1979 in an attempt to gain a psychological advantage on opponents visiting Kinnick Stadium. To this day, Iowa continues to host pink lockers for visiting teams. Kiffin also used the ploy while at Ole Miss.
