The Alabama Crimson Tide have a number of players on both sides of the ball who are currently dealing with injuries ahead of Saturday's game at Mississippi State.
Included in that list are both Justin Hill and Desmond Umeozulu, a pair of outside linebackers who missed the South Carolina game due to an injury. Also included are two starting offensive linemen, Jayvin James and William Sanders, both of which suffered injuries Saturday night against the Gamecocks.
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer updated the status of each Monday during his weekly press conference, as well as commented on the timeline those four are on as to when they could return to the field.
“Will (Sanders), upper-body injury during the game," DeBoer said. "I would expect that he would be
able to play on Saturday. We’re working through it here, but I would expect that he’ll be ready to go, and it just kind of depends on what the week looks like. Jayvin (James), lower extremity. I would say he’s very much questionable at this time. Again, we’ll see how the next 24-48 hours, and I think that will help kind of understand what that looks like at the end of the week, but I would say he’s very questionable at this time.”
“Both of them will continue to miss some time," DeBoer said of Hill and Umeozulu. "Justin will not be as long. Des will be a little further into the season. Justin's is a lower extremity, as well as Des. Both happened in the Florida State game. Those guys obviously played valuable snaps for us. Get some other guys to play some snaps that haven’t got as many reps, and other guys that are on the field played more snaps, so, it’s unfortunate for those guys because they’re playing some good football for us.”
Against South Carolina, junior Tyrell Miller was the player who saw time at right tackle when James exited the game due to injury. Mal Waldrep Jr. saw action at left guard in the second half in place of Sanders.
In the absence of Hill and Umeozulu, Jan-Marien Latham was among the players who saw an uptick in playing time against South Carolina along Alabama's defensive front.
Alabama's next game comes this upcoming Saturday, Oct. 3, on the road at Mississippi State. Kickoff from Davis Wade Stadium is set for 11 a.m. CT on ABC.
