Following a dominant 56-23 win by Alabama over a ranked Mississippi State on the road, two Alabama defenders earned SEC weekly honors for Week 5, as announced by the conference Monday. Sophomore defensive lineman London Simmons was named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week and freshman linebacker Xavier Griffin was named Co-Freshman of the Week.
Simmons was a key piece to an Alabama defensive line that dominated the game as he finished with two tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.
Griffin had a breakout game against Mississippi State with nine tackles and a sack, and was all over the field throughout the game.
All in all, Alabama's defense had five sacks and held Mississippi State to 302 yards and 23 points, both well below
their season averages.
Simmons and Griffin are the fifth and sixth Alabama players to earn weekly honors this season, joining the defensive trio of Luke Metz, Caleb Woodson, and Devan Thompkins in Week 2 and then kicker Conor Talty in Week 3.
