As recently as last summer, Alabama had been scheduled to face West Virginia in Morgantown to open 2026, but the schools mutually agreed to cancel their home-and-home series after the SEC announced its move to a nine-game conference schedule.
Coach Kalen DeBoer's third season in Tuscaloosa will instead begin with a matchup against one of the better programs in the American Athletic Conference, widely regarded as college football's top Group of Six league.

Oddsmakers have Alabama as a 28.5-point favorite over East Carolina, but as is the case every week during the 2026 college football season, ESPN Analytics will have its own odds for Saturday's games.
ESPN's matchup predictor, which offers a prediction model based on its college football power index and other variables, gives Alabama a 94.6% chance to win. East Carolina has a 5.4% chance.
Of the 13 SEC teams playing against a Group of Six or FCS opponent in Week 1, only the Kentucky Wildcats have lower odds of winning, though first-year coach Will Stein's team is still given a 93.6% chance of beating Youngstown State in their opener at Kroger Field in Lexington. Alabama will visit Kentucky in Week 2.
For context, Georgia, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Missouri and Kentucky all face FCS teams in Week 1. Florida, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M all face Group of Six programs that rank lower than East Carolina in preseason FBS rankings from USA TODAY Sports and other national outlets.
The Crimson Tide are eighth overall in ESPN's FPI ratings entering the season, and third among SEC teams. Alabama has a 20.1 overall FPI rating. East Carolina has an minus-0.6 rating that's 68th in ESPN's metrics.

Alabama football odds of reaching 2026 College Football Playoff
In ESPN's FPI ratings entering Week 1, Alabama's chances of reaching the 12-team College Football Playoff are 42.2%. While that number may seem small, it's the ninth-best overall odds of reaching the CFP among all 68 Power Four conference teams, and the third highest of any SEC team behind Texas and Georgia.
The Crimson Tide are given a 10.3% chance of winning the SEC championship, an 8% chance of reaching the national championship game on Jan. 25 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, and a 3.8% shot of winning the national title. Those percentages are all third-best for any SEC team entering 2026.
Alabama is one spot behind the Miami Hurricanes (21.8) in the initial FPI ratings and one spot ahead of LSU (20.0).
