Alabama softball has landed a commitment from a five-star recruit.
Class of 2028 pitcher Sydney Root (Xavier College Preparatory, Phoenix) announced her commitment to coach Patrick Murphy's Crimson Tide program in a post to social media Monday evening.
"I am so excited to announce my commitment to the University of Alabama to further my academic and softball career. Thank you to my family, coaches, teammates, and everyone who has supported me throughout this journey. Thank you to Coach Murphy and the entire Alabama softball staff for believing in me and providing this incredible opportunity! See you in T-TOWN! RTR!" Root wrote in a post to X (formerly Twitter).
Root is ranked the No. 3 pitcher in the class by Rivals.com, and the No. 9 softball
player overall. She led Xavier College Prep to a Class 6A state championship last season.
Root was the 2026 MaxPreps Softball Player of the Year for Arizona. She had a 0.99 ERA and 225 strikeouts for the year while also clubbing six home runs at the plate this past year.

Alabama has had some notable success with a player from The Copper State recently. Jocelyn Briski, the 2026 SEC Pitcher of the Year, committed to the Tide from Desert Vista High School in Phoenix in 2022.
Alabama is coming off a 56-9 season that included a 19-5 mark in SEC play. The Crimson Tide were the No. 1 national seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the semifinals of the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
