Former Alabama defensive lineman and two-time national champion Da’Shawn Hand suffered a torn quadriceps in the Atlanta Falcons' 20-13 Week 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. As a result, Hand will miss the remainder of the 2026 NFL season, as announced by the Falcons on Monday.
Hand signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Falcons this past offseason after starting 13 games for the Chargers last season. Hand was a fourth round pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2018 NFL draft and has also played for the Titans and Dolphins.
Hand was a four-year contributor on the Alabama defensive line where he played from 2014-17, helping Alabama win two national titles in 2015 and 2017.
Hand dealt with injuries throughout his Alabama tenure, but he finished
with career totals of 71 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, and nine sacks. Hand was a second team All-SEC selection as a senior. He also had a two TFL performance in Alabama’s 2016 CFP National Championship win over Clemson.
Prior to Alabama, Hand was a consensus five-star recruit in the class of 2014 out of Woodbridge High School in Virginia, and was Alabama’s second-highest rated signee in that class, per the 247Sports composite.
While Hand will miss the remainder of the season, Alabama will be well-represented on the Falcons with Tua Tagovailoa, Brian Robinson Jr., DeMarcco Hellams, and Christian Harris on the roster, as well as Kam Dewberry on the practice squad.
