Only Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams could find something wrong with his record breaking performance in Sunday's 59-37 win over the Carolina Panthers. It is a good thing, though, because it means he is focusing on what he can do better for the future.
However, his performance against the Panthers in the season opener isn't a game fans are going to forget anytime soon. Williams had four total touchdowns -- two through the air and two on the ground and two through the air -- and also totaled over 300 total yards -- 269 passing and 65 on the ground. Nonetheless, Williams is more focused on the opportunities he missed in this game.
“There were a few passes I left out there,” he said. “There was one that should’ve been a touchdown to Colston
[Loveland] that I missed. Threw it a little too far in front of him. Just small things like that. You don’t get those opportunities too often - you get the perfect coverage with the perfect route and so gotta hit those. Those are important for me and this team and us chugging along to our goal.”
Perhaps what is more surprising than the fact that Chicago put up 59 points is how they got those points. The Bears leading receiver last year, tight end Colston Loveland, was only targeted twice and never caught a pass. Tight end Cole Kmet had a touchdown while Kalif Raymond was the leading receiver. Rome Odunze only caught the ball twice, although his 47-yarder was probably his best reception so far in the NFL.
Being able to dominate like the Bears did without their top three receivers going off shows just how dangerous Chicago is this season. They will now put their high-powered offense to the test against the Minnesota Vikings in their first division game of the season on Sunday.
