The Chicago Bears pass rush struggled in the season opener against the Carolina Panthers, sacking quarterback Bryce Young twice but allowing him to throw for 300 passing yards and three touchdowns. Even though the Bears lost their game against the Minnesota Vikings, at least their defense improved.
Chicago was able to sack backup quarterback Carson Wentz three times and hold him to a quarterback rating of 77.7 after Young had a QBR of 107.5. One of the Bears’ defensive leaders, Gardy Jarrett, talked about Chicago’s defensive mindset in Week 2 and going forward this season.
“I think definitely affecting the quarterback has been on top of our mind,” Jarrett said. “And we’ve been getting better week in, week out; from the game plan to the players,
with an attacking mindset. It’s something that we definitely, definitely hold in high regard. That’s definitely a growth point. And obviously, some of the blitzes coaches dialing up.”
After their loss against the Vikings, Chicago will be looking to get back in the winning column on Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Bears will need to lean on their defense in this matchup given their quarterback uncertainty with Caleb Williams most likely out and Tyson Bagent’s availability in question. Despite everything going on with Chicago’s offense, Jarrett still has the same mentality of focusing on winning.
“We were on [Sunday], but obviously, I’m going to keep saying it; we want to win, but there are a lot of good growth opportunities here,” Jarrett said. “And things will be built off of those.”
