The Chicago Bears had their way with the Tennessee Titans’ defense for a good portion of their joint practice on Thursday, where quarterback Caleb Williams got off to a hot start.
Chicago used trick plays to throw Tennessee off guard including a trick play where Williams handed the ball off to running back D’Andre Swift who pitched it back to Williams and found a wide-open Cole Kmet for the touchdown.
After the joint practice, Williams broke down what was working for the offense early in that practice. The main thing he said it came down to was execution, which the Bears were lacking in their preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
"It’s just something that I would say from last week to this week is just working on execution, the flags and
things like that," Williams said. "Then also, it’s leading from the head of the snake down to the tail. And when we come out with good energy, when we come out and we’re executing, we’re not having penalties and things like that as the first team. It trickles down to the second team and third team and just having that energy. And so being able to start like that, we have to be able to start like that throughout the year. And then when we come out from halftime, we have to come out better than we did today."
In the second half of practice, the Titans ramped up the pressure, which the offense had a bit of a hard time with which decreased their performance in the second half of practice overall. That was not all on Williams as the offensive line, particularly Braxton Jones who was in at left tackle, had trouble with.
Chicago’s preseason finale against Tennessee should provide some clarity in some of the Bears’ key position battles, especially concerning who the starting left tackle will be. Jones still appears to be the frontrunner, but Theo Benedet should also factor into the equation before Ozzy Trapilo's return.
