The Chicago Bears got some good news on the injury front regarding starting cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson just over a week away from their season opener against the Carolina Panthers.
Johnson and Stevenson appeared to be full participants during Wednesday's practice, according to the Chicago Tribune's Sean Hammond. This comes on the heels of head coach Ben Johnson explaining both Johnson and Stevenson were day-to-day with their respective injuries.
Both Johnson and Stevenson suffered injuries during a joint practice against the Tennessee Titans on Aug. 27, with Johnson nursing an apparent elbow injury and Stevenson a leg injury.
The Bears have been hit hard by injuries in their secondary this summer, including most notably to
safety Coby Bryant, who will miss most of the 2026 season after knee surgery, and cornerback Kyler Gordon, who missed the entire summer with a calf injury. But the prognosis for Johnson and Stevenson, who are starters, is much more encouraging.
Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen recently commented on what he's seen from Johnson as he returns from an injury-plagued 2025 season.
“I’ve seen a guy that’s really taken a step forward,” Allen said. “He probably feels more like himself, and I’ve been really pleased with what I’ve seen out of him, in particular over the course of the last two weeks.
“His leadership has started to come to the forefront a little bit, and that’s needed. We need him to play at a very high level for us to be successful. And I think he understands that, he accepts that challenge and he’s looking forward to it.”
