Going into the Monday night matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chicago Bears offensive line had what seemed like a difficult task -- keep third-string quarterback Case Keenum upright and have a stellar night in run blocking.
While the run game did not pan out how the Bears wanted it to, especially in the first half, the offensive line had no problem keeping Keenum upright in the pocket. He was getting the ball out fast in Chicago’s 27-7 win over the Eagles, but that was not because the protection was breaking down. Keenum was able to get through his reads and find the open receiver.
He actually was not sacked in the entire game. This may be the first NFL game Keenum has played in since 2023, but this game was also the first time since October
of 2019 that he started a game and was not sacked. Keenum had Eagles players in his face multiple times. However, he was able to deliver the ball under pressure and move the chains.
"Just an absolute pro. Prepares every day,” Thuney said of Keenum's performance. “You saw it [Monday night]. I'm so proud of him, so happy for him."
Keenum’s performance Monday night creates somewhat of a quarterback controversy for the Bears in the event starter Caleb Williams is not able to play in Sunday’s game against the New York Jets. Tyson Bagent came into the season as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart. But, it is hard to argue that he still has that job after Keenum got the start over him and had such a great performance with three total touchdowns for the first time since playing against the Eagles in the season opener for Washington in 2019.
