In their high-powered offensive showcase that propelled the Chicago Bears victory over the Carolina Panthers last Sunday, their running game stole the show.
Between running backs D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai, as well as quarterback Caleb Williams, the Bears
had 291 total rushing yards, their third time reaching 250+ rushing yards since the beginning of last season, as well as six rushing touchdowns.Chicago used a healthy balance of Swift and Monangai in the game, with the second-year player getting 10 carries and 100 yards behind his veteran teammate, 61 yards of which came on his big touchdown run. When asked about his big play, Monangai said he just wanted to make the play count.
"It was great blocking, and Luther (Burden) making a great block,"
Monangai said when asked about what he saw on the play. "I was able to come off him, keep my balance. You dream of stuff like that. I was just trying to make the play count."
While there's no denying that Swift will be the team's lead back this season, there should be an expectation of a healthy dose of carries in each game for Monangai as well. A lot of focus is on Williams and his growth as a franchise leader, but head coach Ben Johnson is clearly also making the running game a big part of what they do as well.
