There is not a single player on the Chicago Bears defense who has been with the team longer than Jaylon Johnson. The lockdown cornerback, who was drafted by Chicago back in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, has stepped up as a leader countless times throughout his tenure with the Bears and did so again during Tuesday's training camp practice.
According to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, right before one of the final team periods, Johnson had the offense and defense huddle up and told the team their performance was "not good enough." He also helped edge rusher Montez Sweat to the sideline after Chicago’s long-drive drill.
This is not surprising from Johnson, who has been a vocal leader for the Bears’ defense for many years. It is also a welcome sight
to see given many players across the NFL have said the best teams are player-led teams and Johnson is taking the initiative to lead this Chicago defense.
Last season, Johnson missed a good chunk of the regular season due to groin injuries but was able to come back later in the season and in time for the playoffs. In his six-year career, last season marked the first time the two-time Pro-Bowler was able to play in a postseason game.
Johnson is going into a contract year as his current deal only goes through the 2027 season. He has a $24.5 million cap hit this season and is currently slated to have a $25 million cap hit next season. If Johnson is able to stay healthy for most of his season, between his talent and how valuable he is on the roster as a leader, he should definitely land a new contract this offseason.
