Despite everything that happened in the Chicago Bears' brutal 9-3 loss against the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago had a chance to win it on the final drive of the game. With quarterback Caleb Williams out for the rest of the game, it was up to Tyson Bagent to lead the game-winning drive.
It started out well with a 6-yard completion to Luther Burden followed by another completion to Burden. Rome Odunze got Chicago down to the Minnesota 20-yard line and a final catch from Burden to get the Bears to the 12. After that catch, the clock kept running and Chicago ultimately lost about 15 seconds trying to get back to the line of scrimmage. In the end, Bagent was sacked as time expired within scoring distance to put a stamp on an overall brutal day.
After
the game, Bagent shared what head coach Ben Johnson told the team after the game about the loss and the lack of hustle in that moment.
"Just an unfortunate loss with it being a divisional opponent, but we got to get back to the drawing board,” Bagent said. "We got to get better in a hurry because we got Monday Night Football coming up against Philly, so got to be prepared for that."
In all likelihood, Bagent will be Chicago’s starting quarterback for their game against the Philadelphia Eagles next Monday night after Williams’ hamstring injury. If that does happen, it would be his first start since his rookie year in 2023 when Justin Fields missed four games due to injury.
In those four starts, Bagent went 2-2. That was back when Matt Eberflus was the head coach. So, Monday would be the first time Bagent starts a game with Ben Johnson as the play caller. This also does not give him a lot of time to build chemistry with the wide receivers as neither Odunze, Burden, Kalif Raymond or tight end Colston Loveland were on the roster back in 2023.
