There were a number of things that went wrong in the Chicago Bears' 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, including the loss of Caleb Williams. But even with their starting quarterback sidelined, Chicago still had opportunities to win the game in the fourth quarter.
Shortly after Tyson Bagent replaced Williams, the Bears lined up for a 23-yard, chip-shot field goal, that would've tied the game. Instead, rookie tight end Sam Roush whiffed on a block and Vikings cornerback Isaiah Rodgers blocked the field goal.
After the game, head coach Ben Johnson was frustrated with the operation on the play, especially after a near-block on the first field goal attempt.
"The operation was not clean. The snap was not good,” Johnson said. "The first field goal was a warning
shot as far as I’m concerned."
Johnson also said they talked about the first field goal on the sideline but were not able to get it cleaned up based on what happened on the second field goal attempt. The snap was poor on Chicago’s only field goal of the day, but punter Tory Taylor was able to corral the ball to allow kicker Cairo Santos to have a successful field goal.
Rodgers, who also recovered a fumble by running back D’Andre Swift, blocked the field goal and nearly blocked the first field goal. It was the first block for Santos since Chicago’s win against the Cincinnati Bengals last season.
Chicago will go into their next game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football looking to clean things up on all phases and look to get above .500 without their starting quarterback and in a competitive NFC North.
