Even in college, Chicago Bears rookie wide receiver Zavion Thomas had a lot of highlight-worthy plays on offense and special teams. In his preseason showing for the Bears against the Tennessee Titans, Thomas showed that his talent will translate to the NFL.
Thomas led Chicago with five catches on five targets for 140 yards, including a 97-yard touchdown from quarterback Tyson Bagent on the first offensive play of the game. Thomas also excelled as a return specialist, including a 39-yard kick return and a 22-yard punt return.
Head coach Ben Johnson was impressed with Thomas’ performance in this game, especially because he missed time in training camp due to injury. However, he also wants to ensure that the rookie receiver maintains his humility
and remains humble.
"He’s had a knack for making big plays, and getting him back out after his injury was huge to give him a taste of real football," Johnson said. "We don’t want the production going to his head, wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle-El and Isaiah Ford are on him constantly about the details, but it’s a great start."
Chicago will start their regular season on Sept. 13 against the Carolina Panthers. Thomas may not see a lot of action in that game, but will likely become more involved in the offense as the season progresses. It also would not be surprising for Thomas to be used as a kick and punt returner this season despite being listed as a second-team returner on the unofficial depth chart.
