Back when Ben Johnson was hired as Chicago Bears head coach, he brought in up-and-comer Declan Doyle to serve as offensive coordinator. While Doyle wasn't responsible for any of the playcalling, since Johnson is handling that, it was a move that some people questioned given how young Doyle is.
However, those questions evaporated rather quickly. Declan proved to be a successful coordinator and was hired by the Baltimore Ravens to be their offensive coordinator and offensive playcaller in the offseason. Even though Doyle only worked with Johnson for one season, Doyle said he learned the importance of holding everyone to a high standard.
"He’s very demanding to the standard," Doyle said of Johnson. "Whatever we agree upon as ‘this is what we want
to be,’ he holds everybody to that every day … that’s really what I’ve tried to emulate."
Last season under Johnson and Doyle, the Bears had one of the best offenses in the NFL, finishing in the top 10 in nearly every statistical category. Chicago will be looking to replicate that production with many of the same players under their new offensive coordinator, Press Taylor.
Chicago elevated Taylor from pass game coordinator to offensive coordinator following Doyle’s departure. As the pass game coordinator for the Bears, Taylor helped quarterback Caleb Williams set the franchise single-season passing yards record. This is Taylor’s second stint as an offensive coordinator as he previously served in that role from 2022 to 2024 with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The first real look at the Bears’ offense under Taylor will be in Chicago’s season opener against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 13.
