The Chicago Bears suffered a deflating 31-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers, where there was plenty of blame to go around in all phases. That includes head coach Ben Johnson, whose struggles in NFC North play continue to be an issue. But it was his offensive play calling and decision making that are drawing criticism.
Johnson had his worst game as an offensive play caller and head coach in this loss to the Packers, where his decision to stick with quarterback Tyson Bagent instead of turning to veteran Case Keenum prompted questions. But he didn't do Bagent, or Keenum after him, any favors.
Following the loss, Johnson discussed the offense's struggles and ultimately placed the blame on himself while also crediting Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan
Gannon.
“When you can’t get in a rhythm offensively like today, I got to look at myself first,” Johnson said. “Just, what did we have in? Did we prepare the right way? And certainly with what the play calls were in real time also. They had a nice plan.
“Jonathan Gannon’s been doing this for a long time and I thought he did a great job today keeping us off balance and yet we simply didn’t execute at the level we expected to going into the game.”
One thing the Bears have done well under Johnson is bouncing back after tough losses, and they have an opportunity to do just that when they face the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6. To make matters better, they might even get back starting quarterback Caleb Williams, who's missed the last three games due to a hamstring injury.
“We’ll do what we do every week and we’ll look at what we did well and what we didn’t do well enough,” Johnson said. “Winning minimizes the mistakes. Losing maximizes them. They’re there every single week.
“I’ll tell you what I told the team: ‘I believe in this coaching staff. I believe in our players. I believe in our process.’ So the process doesn’t change. It’s Week 5. I know we’ll respond the right way. We got the right guys in this building.”
