It may not have been the prettiest win, but the Chicago Bears still dominated the New York Jets and moved to 3-1 after their 23-12 victory. Tyson Bagent played the entire game for Chicago at quarterback although Case Keenum was technically credited with the start after being out there for the first play of the game for a handoff.
The score does not accurately reflect how much the Bears controlled this game. They possessed the ball for nearly 43 minutes, had nearly 500 total yards, compared to New York's 157 yards, and had 34 first downs compared to the Jets' seven first downs. Particularly in the second half, Chicago's run game took over with Kyle Monangai who finished the game with 146 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Especially with starting
quarterback Caleb Williams still out with his hamstring injury, seeing the Bears can win back-to-back games in dominant fashion in two completely different ways is incredibly promising for Chicago's season. Here are our studs and two duds from this Week 4 victory:
Stud: RB Kyle Monangai
Kyle Monangai had a career day with his most career carries (30), second-most rushing yards (146) and his first game with multiple rushing touchdowns. He carried his Chicago offense to victory, which the Bears really needed after D'Andre Swift's fumble, which resulted in a Jets' field goal to make it a one-possession game. Chicago has two running backs that are capable of taking over a game, and Monangai proved why he belongs in the NFL against the Jets who came into this game as one of the best rushing defenses in the league.
Stud: WR Rome Odunze
After not doing much of anything in the first three games of the season, Rome Odunze finally had a game a No. 1 receiver should have. For the first time this year, he finished the game as Chicago's leading receiver with six receptions for 94 yards, which was his most receiving yards in a game in nearly a year. With Odunze finally back in the swing of things for Chicago's receiving core, this offense can be even more dangerous next week against the Green Bay Packers.
Stud: WR Luther Burden III
It is kind of backwards, but ever since Williams suffered his injury and Chicago has had to rely on Bagent and Keenum, Luther Burden III has come alive. In this game, he was targeted six times and had four receptions for 63 yards as well as a rushing attempt for 11 yards. Burden has really stepped up when the offense needs him and now has over 60 receiving yards in three out of four games this season.
Stud: K Cairo Santos
Cairo Santos has been Mr. Reliable for the Bears so far this season, and Chicago's Week 4 game against the Jets was no exception. He made all three of his field goal attempts and two extra points. Santos' 11 points were the difference in this game. Looking at the entire season, he has not missed a field goal with the exception of the block in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings, but that had nothing to do with Santos. He may be having his best season so far through the first four games.
Stud: Bears run defense
After allowing over 100 rushing yards in each of the first three games, the Bears held the Jets to just 59 rushing yards. Granted this is probably related to the fact that New York's run game was struggling coming into this game and their star running back, Breece Hall, did not play. Still, it is an accomplishment in the NFL to hold a team to under 60 rushing yards. Chicago will be looking to do that again next week against the Green Bay Packers, who have the worst rushing offense in the league.
Stud: LB Devin Bush
Sometimes, a player's impact on the game does not show up on the stat sheet. Devin Bush only had four tackles although one of them was a sack. Watching the game, Bush was flying all over the field, giving 110 percent on every play. Through the first four games of the season, he has been a great addition to Chicago's linebacker room. Ben Johnson awarded him a game ball following the win.
Stud: Bears offensive line
When you run the ball 54 times, have 232 rushing yards, two touchdowns and average 4.3 yards per attempt, the offensive line is to thank. Chicago may have the best run blocking offensive line in the NFL as this is their second game with over 200 rushing yards. As an added bonus, Bagent was only sacked once the entire game. Through four games, Chicago's quarterbacks have only been sacked seven times and did not allow Case Keenum to get sacked in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Stud: DE Dayo Obeyingbo
Through the first four games of the season, defensive end Dayo Obeyingbo has seven total tackles. However, he makes those tackles count. With his sack against the Jets, Obeyingbo now has a sack in the last three games for the Bears. He also has the most sacks out of anyone on the roster with edge rusher Montez Sweat in second with two sacks. While the numbers do not jump off the page, Obeyingbo is quietly becoming an important part of this defense.
Dud: RB D'Andre Swift
When you have a 14-play, 93-yard drive, it should end in a touchdown especially when you have multiple chances inside the five-yard line. Chicago gave the ball to D'Andre Swift at the three-yard line and while it was originally ruled a touchdown, it was overturned. The Bears still had another chance on third and goal. After an incomplete pass, Chicago tried handing it off to Swift again on fourth and goal and he could not get in. Then in the third quarter, he lost a fumble. That was also his second lost fumble of the season after losing a crucial fumble in the Bears' loss to the Vikings. He was the most disappointing player on Chicago's offense in this game, but at least Kyle Monangai was able to take things over. Still, a veteran like him should not have a game like this.
Dud: CB Tyrique Stevenson
New York never should have gotten into the end zone. Chicago went over 50 minutes without allowing a touchdown and then Tyrique Stevenson blows his coverage on Isaiah Williams, and the Jets scored a 58-yard touchdown. It gave New York a glimmer of hope and made it an 11-point. The Bears should have won this game 23-6 and it is because of Stevenson that they it was closer.
