The Chicago Bears made a statement with a 30-24 win over the New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football, which featured a thrilling back-and-forth between Chicago's Caleb Williams and New England's Drake Maye. But, in the end, Williams was able to get the upper hand and send the Bears to a 5-2 record ahead of a mini-bye.
Before Chicago's Week 7 win, Williams had not won on a Thursday in the NFL. However, between his performance and the defense stepping up when needed, along with Cairo Santos’ 58-yard field goal, got Chicago the win and he was fired up after the game.
“These nights are awesome. You play versus another good team in a primetime game in a short week, these games are awesome because you get to see who we are as a team,” Williams
said. “That’s who we are. We’re a smashmouth football team, innovative team, and then when things happen and things don’t go our way and the water is rocky, we stay steady. We’re going to keep going, we’re going to keep fighting. That’s who I know we are.”
Ultimately, the game came down to the 2024 draft quarterbacks -- former No. 1 pick Williams and No. 3 pick Maye. Williams finished the game with 308 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Maye, on the other hand, had a costly red zone interception that Chicago was able to turn into a touchdown just before halftime.
Williams now has wins over the No. 2 and No. 3 overall picks in the draft after defeating No. 2 pick, Jayden Daniels, last season in prime time. He will have the chance to take down another quarterback drafted No. 3 overall, Sam Darnold from the 2018 NFL Draft, in Chicago’s Monday night game against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 8.
