If things continue to progress as they have this week, then there's a good chance that the Chicago Bears will have quarterback Caleb Williams back under center against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
Williams has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury, and the Bears went 2-1 in his absence with Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum under center. While the recovery process surely hasn't been easy for Williams, offensive coordinator Press Taylor shared some insight into how he's handled it.
“You certainly feel his energy when he’s around. I mean, he’s got a big personality to begin with. People respond to him, people look to him just as a leader of our team, as a captain, so you sense that from him. But also I think he’s done a pretty good job
of when the time is right, of taking a step back for the other guys that are starting and they’re the quarterback and they’re in charge of the huddle at that point in time. So, he’s done a good job in the situations he’s in. It’s not a situation guys are normally in that are your starting quarterbacks from the get-go. So, I've been pretty proud of the way he’s handled it so far.”
Given how much noise there was around Williams' persona coming out of college (to say nothing of how much attention his reaction to the injury received), this is kind of the ideal thing to hear coming out of the locker room.
Williams' consistent involvement with the team throughout his recover is a crucial element of maintaining a positive mindset while out, and that Williams has demonstrated an ability to both remain involved and, when the situation calls for it, allow Bagent and Keenum to do their thing is noteworthy considering that prior context.
That presence should help Williams to adapt quickly upon his return, whether that takes place on Sunday against Atlanta or at a later date.
