The Chicago Bears have been active near the trade deadline before and this year was no exception. In the biggest deal general manager Ryan Poles has made in his time with the Bears, Chicago traded two first-round picks for Tennessee Titans All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons.
Not only is Simmons known as an amazing player on the field, but he is also known for his humanitarian work off the field. He started his own foundation in 2022, the Give ‘Em a Reason Foundation, to help single-parents. Simmons also partnered with countless organizations in the Nashville area throughout his time with the Titans.
“We are excited to welcome Jeffery Simmons and his family to Chicago,” Poles said. “We extend our gratitude to the Tennessee Titans and [Titans
general manager] Mike Borgonzi for their partnership and collaboration throughout this process. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to add a player, and a human, like Jeffery to our team, and we look forward to Jeffery’s leadership and command as we continue to work toward sustained success.”
While this is a blockbuster trade, it is actually strikingly similar to a move Chicago made a little over eight years ago when they acquired Khalil Mack from the Raiders. The Bears also gave up multiple first round picks to get Mack under former general manager Ryan Pace. However, the compensation was a little different since Chicago also gave up a third-round and sixth-round pick, but got a second-round and seventh-round pick in return. The Bears used that second-round pick on tight end Cole Kmet.
With this trade, not only did they give up their next two first-round picks, but Chicago also gave up a fourth-round pick. Tennessee gave them a fifth-rounder with Simmons. Time will tell if this trade paid off for both franchises.
