In his entire football career, quarterback Caleb Williams had never missed playing time due to an injury until his hamstring injury in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings. He missed three games, but was able to come back for the Chicago Bears’ 31-23 win against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6.
Not being able to play for a few weeks forced Williams to take a step back as he worked through his recovery. He wanted to get back on the field, but maintained a positive attitude throughout the whole experience.
“You’re itching on the sideline during the season,” Williams said. “I’ve had a hamstring injury before, but it was at the end of the year. I had three weeks to be able to get back and play. So, being able to sit back and recover, recover, recover.
It was just me having a consistent positive mindset throughout the weeks over myself and about myself of being able to get back, trying to get back, fighting to get back. And when I get back, just to show them who I am and who we are.”
He certainly proved who he is and that the injury has not changed him against the Falcons. Williams completed over 80 percent of his passes. Chicago had twice as many penalties as Williams had incompletions, which also says the Bears need to cut down on their penalties. He also did not turn the ball over, although running back Roschon Johnson lost a fumble and the Falcons turned that into a touchdown.
Chicago is going to have a lot of success this season as long as Williams is available. The Bears will certainly need him for their next game against the New England Patriots on a short week. Williams is still looking for his first win on Thursday after losing his first two Thursday games.
