After releasing linebacker Tremaine Edmunds in the offseason, the Chicago Bears signed his replacement, Devin Bush. Bush is a former top 10 pick in the NFL Draft who spent four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, a year with the Seattle Seahawks and the past two seasons with the Cleveland Browns.
Bush excelled in his rookie season and finished as No. 3 in voting for Defensive Rookie of the Year. However, he has not performed that well for several years until last year when he had three interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns. He also recorded a career-high 125 total tackles, making him a valuable free agent prospect this offseason.
Chicago signed him to a three-year, $30 million contract with $21 million guaranteed. During training
camp, he got the opportunity to practice against running back D’Andre Swift and has been really impressed with what he has seen.
"The same Swift he’s always been. Man, his last name describes it all, for real, for real,” Bush said. "Really good between the tackles, really good in space, play behind his pads, can make a guy miss in the open field, and good enough to run past you or through you. He’s one of those all-around backs, for real."
This is Swift’s third year with Chicago and will once again serve as the Bears' lead back. Last season was arguably the best season of his career so far with a career-high in rushing yards (1,087) and rushing touchdowns (9). Backup running back Kyle Monangai will probably be more involved in the offense this season, but Swift will still serve as the primary back and could easily have another 1,000-yard this year.
