The Chicago Bears are roughly a week away from their season opener against the Carolina Panthers, and there are some lingering injury questions heading into the game, including running back Kyle Monangai.
Monangai suffered a minor knee injury during an Aug. 16 practice, which was expected to sideline him through the preseason and up to the season opener. Head coach Ben Johnson noted that Monangai remains "week-to-week," but if you listen to his teammate D'Andre Swift, Monangai is gearing up for a return.
“He’s out there working,” Swift said last week. “I watched him work, run today. He looked good to me. He’s in good spirits, but (I’m) just telling him to take it one day at a time. Nobody’s rushing him. He’ll come back when he’s ready.”
Considering
the season opener is just a week away, it's difficult to believe that Monangai will be full-go against the Panthers, which puts the onus on lead back Swift and Roschon Johnson, who earned the final roster spot this summer.
Monangai is coming off an impressive rookie season, where he totaled 783 rushing yards, averaging 4.6 yards per carry, and five touchdowns as the complement back to Swift. The duo led a top-three rushing attack in the NFL, and the hope is they can build off that in 2026.
