There is no denying that Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams wants to get back out on the field as quickly as possible after suffering a hamstring injury that caused him to leave last week’s loss of the Minnesota Vikings.
While the team is not ready to announce who their starting quarterback will be on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles at Soldier Field, head coach Ben Johnson knows he has to keep the reins on Williams, to protect the long-term franchise investment.
Williams is listed as week-to-week after suffering a grade one hamstring strain in Week 2, but he’s already looking to get back to work and do all he can to find himself back on the field. Johnson told reporters that Williams' desire to be a competitor is something they
have to keep a hold on, but also something they love about him as well.
"I know he's an antsy individual. He's a competitor," Johnson said. "He wants to be out there on the grass going full speed. So it is a little bit more challenging to hold a guy back like that. But if you could build a player, that's what you'd want him to be like."
Chicago will obviously exercise caution with their quarterback, looking to not push him and risk further injury, but he clearly is eager to get back on the field and play. The team is in a wait and see approach with Williams. But the faster he can return to full health, the organization and the fan base will be able to breathe a bit easier.
