When Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams went down in the fourth quarter against the Minnesota Vikings during their Week 2 loss, it looked like Williams’ season might be over. But, his hamstring injury is not as bad as originally feared and he is considered week-to-week.
The news about Williams was a relief to Bears fans, as well as to the players including right guard Jonah Jackson, who has full confidence that head coach Ben Johnson will ensure quarterbacks Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum are ready.
“It’s definitely great to know your brother is going to be alright, but we got two other guys in that room that are fully capable of doing that job,” Jackson said. “No other guy to have them ready than Ben Johnson. So, we’ll be alright.”
Williams
is not expected to practice all week leading up to Chicago’s Week 3 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Even though he has not officially been ruled out, backup Tyson Bagent is expected to get the start. If he does, it will be the first time since his rookie year in 2023 that he starts a game. It would also be his first start on Monday Night Football. Jackson is confident in Bagent if he is the one who ends up starting.
“He’s got full confidence in himself,” Jackson said. “We’ve got full confidence in him. We know he can dink-and-dunk the ball around and sling it and also get after it with his feet.”
In the five games Bagent got significant playing time back in 2023, he won two games and recorded a 65.7 percent completion percentage, 859 yards, three touchdown passes and six interceptions. Three of those picks came in Chicago’s loss to the New Orleans Saints.
