The Chicago Bears suffered the worst loss of the Ben Johnson era as the Green Bay Packers defeated them 31-7 on Sunday at Lambeau Field. There was plenty of blame to go around, including quarterback Tyson Bagent, who made his second straight start in place of an injured Caleb Williams.
Bagent had an up-and-down showing against the New York Jets, but he was downright awful against the Packers, where he was never able to get into an offensive rhythm. Bagent completed 12-of-21 passes for 87 yards and two interceptions before being replaced by third-string QB Case Keenum at the start of the fourth quarter.
Things didn't go much better when Keenum entered the game, although Chicago was already down 31-7 at that point. Following the game, Bagent spoke
about his benching, where he put the onus on himself to play better.
“You would definitely not want to be benched, especially with the opportunity that I’ve been blessed with, but … I’ve got to play better,” Bagent said. “I’ve got to look in the mirror, see where I can continue to get better, because there’s a lot of things still, even this far into my career, that I can certainly get better at.”
There's optimism that Williams will return for Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons. But, if Williams can't go, it presents an interesting decision for head coach Ben Johnson and his coaching staff about who to start against the Falcons. Even if Williams is back in the starting lineup, there's an important decision to be made at QB2.
