The Chicago Bears should have the upper hand in their Week 4 matchup against the New York Jets, who have several key injuries on offense, which appears, on paper, to give Chicago an advantage. The Bears
' defense has created three takeaways a piece in their two victories through the first three weeks, and that will likely be a point of emphasis for them as they look to pick up a second straight win.New York will be without their superstar running back in Breece Hall, as well as wide receiver Adonai Mitchell and tight end Mason Taylor for this game, giving Chicago an opportunity to lock in on the two remaining high-level targets on their offense.
Each week here at Bears Wire, we're looking at the top matchups to watch on the field, and this week,
Chicago's defense is under the microscope:
Bears CB Jaylon Johnson vs. Jets WR Garrett Wilson
The Bears' top corner has had an up-and-down start to the season, but the task is quite simple in the passing game for him up against Garrett Wilson this week. Wilson, the team's top receiver, is their leading receiver who has shown plenty of consistency and efficiency in the first three games, hauling in 21 receptions on 27 targets, with 243 yards and 2 touchdowns to his name.
Bears S Dillon Thieneman vs. Jets TE Kenyon Sadiq
After Wilson, Kenyon Sadiq is the next big threat for the Jets offense and the rookie first-round pick tight end is coming off a big week in the loss to the Detroit Lions. Sadiq finished last week's game with seven receptions, 105 yards, and a touchdown, opening up the middle of the field for quarterback Geno Smith, which is where he likely gets picked up by Dillon Thieneman. Chicago's own first-round rookie, Thieneman is coming off the best game of his young career also, making one of the most crucial plays in last week's win, when he intercepted Eagles quarterback Andy Dalton in the end zone.
Bears RT Darnell Wright vs. Jets EDGE David Bailey
There may be more reason to question the left tackle spot on the Bears offensive line, where Theo Benedet will take over the starting job after Braxton Jones suffered an injury last week. The bigger matchup however, is with Chicago's standout right tackle, Darnell Wright and his likely matchup against No. 2 overall pick David Bailey, a highly-regarded prospect pass rusher. If Wright can shut down Bailey, it should be a clean operation for whoever is under center at quarterback for the Bears.
