When quarterback Caleb Williams is under center, the Chicago Bears represent, objectively, one of the more difficult offenses in the NFL for which to prepare.
With Williams and backup Tyson Bagent each featuring an up-in-the-air status with a hamstring and concussion, respectively, the challenge appears to have evolved in that the opposition may not know in which direction the team could go at the position. Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, however, has a different perspective.
Speaking on whether he was preparing for third-string quarterback Case Keenum this week, Fangio indicated that the team did not have enough information but did not believe that the offense would change all that much schematically, regardless of who's
at quarterback. What was particularly interesting, though, was how he characterized prepping for the Bears with Williams versus without.
"They're an under-center offense a good bit, so it's not like it's a lot of gun zone-read, QB-generated runs," Fangio said. "They're under center, handing it off. They do a great job of blocking."
Functionally, there are no lies detected in what Fangio had to say about the Bears offense. Ben Johnson has been fairly clear during his tenure about how crucial the run game is within his offensive scheme, which is generally not the zone-type scheme that has become so prominent throughout the league. And much of what manifests as far as quarterback runs comes on the strength of Williams' instincts and mobility rather than intentional planning.
Which means that there's probably a fair bit of truth to what Fangio says about Philadelphia's prep for Monday's game against the Bears. While one would not expect Fangio to be too forthcoming about the construction of his gameplan, there is a bit of consistency across the board that one might expect to see whether it's Williams, Bagent, or Keenum. For the Bears, it's simply a matter of execution.
