The Chicago Bears had a statement 30-24 win over the New England Patriots, where everyone on offense got an opportunity to shine. But it was second-year wide receiver Luther Burden III who continues to emerge as a reliable target for quarterback Caleb Williams.
Burden had a monster first half against the Patriots, where he hauled in four catches for 130 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown reception. While Burden wasn't targeted in the second half -- where Rome Odunze started to get into rhythm -- he led the team in receiving and received a game ball at the end. Burden's 130 receiving yards in Week 7 are the most by a Bears player since Burden in Week 17 of last season (138).
Safe to say Burden is emerging as a star receiver for the Bears, and
his connection with Williams will be key to this offense's continued success. Williams has targeted Burden 17 times this season -- and Burden has caught every one of those passes. So it's no surprise that Burden's quarterback wants to keep getting him the ball.
“Luther's a problem child, and we wanna keep getting the ball in his hands," Williams said. "I heard that he's 17 for 17 when the ball's thrown to him so far this season.”
Through the first seven games, Burden leads the Bears in receptions (35), receiving yards (491) and is tied for the most receiving touchdowns (2). There are no shortage of weapons on offense for Chicago, but Burden is proving to be one of their most dangerous, especially when it comes to his playmaking ability after the catch.
