There are no doubts or questions about the Chicago Bears roster on the offensive side of the football, but there is certainly room for improvement in addition on the defense.
The Bears are certainly feeling the impact of being without marquee free agent signing Coby Bryant, who will miss most of the regular season with a knee injury, but the pass rush still has a need for an upgrade, and a trade could be considered if production doesn't increase from the current roster.
Recently, NFL analyst and former Super Bowl champion Devin McCourty appeared on the Up & Adams show, and pitched a hypothetical trade for Chicago to land a pass rusher. Outside of Montez Sweat, there is a real need for a second pass rusher to break through, which led McCourty suggested
that the Bears contact the New York Giants on the availability of young pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.
"If you're going to score a lot of points, then it comes down to your pass defense," McCourty told Adams. "And your pass defense is impacted by your pass rushers or your cover guys, and they've invested in their cover guys. Jaylon Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson, those are guys that they like.
"To me, I know a lot of people in New York are excited, but you may want to call down to the Giants, what are you thinking about with [Kayvon] Thibodeaux. Maybe that's a call they make, you add a pass rusher. To me it's very hard to find good secondary play just off the street, and a lot of time teams aren't going to trade away defensive backs that they like. I think the Giants might be in that area where they have a surplus, so maybe they [Bears] call them. But for right now, you've got to outscore people."
The former fifth overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Thibodeaux has total 23.5 sacks in his first four seasons, but is stuck behind a very deep and talented group of pass rushers in New York. His best season came in 2023, his sophomore year, when he finished with 11.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and 50 total tackles. Depending on the cost, Chicago may want to give consideration to making that call.
