The Chicago Bears put on an offensive show in their season opening win over the Carolina Panthers, where they put up 59 points, the most in Week 1 in NFL history, which included eight touchdowns in a dominant effort.
The Bears totaled 552 yards, including a sensational rushing attack that notched 291 yards on the ground and six rushing touchdowns between running backs D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai, as well as quarterback Caleb Williams.
While Chicago was able to eclipse the 50-point mark, they did fall just short of 60 points, which left some wondering whether or not head coach Ben Johnson would go for two after Swift's final touchdown run of the game late in the fourth quarter.
The day after the game, Bears play-by-play Jeff Joniak chatted with
Johnson about the game, including him personally hoping the team would go for the two-point conversion at the end to get to the 60-point mark. And, in case you were wondering, Johnson essentially indicated the thought did cross his mind.
"I don't think you were the only one," he said.
Before the start of the season, Johnson said that he wanted his offense to be the highest-scoring team in NFL history, a record currently held by the 2013 Denver Broncos (who averaged 37.9 points per game). He certainly made a statement in Week 1 putting up 59 compared to Denver's 37 in their season opener back in 2013. Although, if Johnson is chasing the record, that extra point might've helped.
