Quarterback Caleb Williams had a historic day for the Chicago Bears in the season opener against the Carolina Panthers. He only had eight incompletions, threw for 269 yards, two passing touchdowns, 65 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
The Bears nearly put up 60 points on the Panthers in their 59-37 win, their most ever in a season opener and third-most in any game in the modern era. No Bears quarterback has ever accomplished what Williams did in that game, but he is still not satisfied and made a surprise declaration.
“This is going to be kind of our worst game,” Williams said. “I know points don’t necessarily show that, but execution, the blocking, the penalties, all these different things.”
He has a point when it comes to the penalties.
Chicago had 12 penalties in the opener after having a problem with penalties last season. There were not a lot of penalty yards as the Bears only lost 57 yards on their 12 penalties, but it is still something to address for the future.
However, there was also a lot to celebrate for the Bears’ offense which put up 552 total yards, converted 10 of their 14 third down attempts and averaged nearly eight yards per play. The run game really found a lot of success with nearly 300 rushing yards, 7.5 yards per carry and six touchdowns. D’Andre Swift led the rushing attack with 124 yards and three touchdowns while Kyle Monangai had 100 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown.
Chicago will face a bigger defensive challenge next week when they play their first division game against the Minnesota Vikings who held the Green Bay Packers to 22 points in their 17-point victory. In Brian Flores’ time as the Vikings defensive coordinator, Minnesota has not given up at least 40 points to an opposing offense.
