The Chicago Bears took on the New York Jets at Soldier Field, which became an important game for Chicago as they are on their quest to get back to the playoffs for the second year in a row. They have been facing a bit of adversity with Caleb Williams on the shelf, and they already won a game with Case Keenum on Monday.
This time, they went with Tyson Bagent, and it worked in their favor. The Bears defeated the Jets, 23-12, where Bagent played well enough for the Bears to win the game. Chicago's defense, which was seen as a weakness coming in, did its job of keeping the Jets to just 12 points. The backup quarterbacks don't have to be spectacular before Williams comes back, as long as the defense plays well.
It was the running game that allowed
the Bears to win this game from an offensive standpoint. Kyle Monangai led the way with 146 yards on 30 carries. He also had two touchdowns. D'Andre Swift had 58 yards on 15 carries. In the passing game, the ball was spread out nicely once again. Rome Odunze led the way with 94 yards on six receptions.
Monangai left the game in the fourth quarter with what was later revealed as a thumb injury. With how good he was, it is important that he is able to get back to full strength as soon as possible. At the same time, they have other good backs, especially Swift, who can carry the load if there is an issue.
Now that the Bears are 3-1, they have the Green Bay Packers coming up next. It is important for the Bears to have three wins already in the bank heading into this matchup, which will surely be highly contested simply based on the opponent. It is unclear when Williams will be back, but they have already treaded water nicely without him.
Was this the perfect football game for the Bears? No, it wasn't. Ben Johnson has become known for going for it on fourth and goal on the 1-yard line. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Still, they end up with more points than they would have kicking field goals every time, more often than not. They are also becoming elite at finding ways to win in all situations.
Although there are plenty of people who don't like Ben Johnson's "go for it" mentality, there is no denying his ability to get the best out of what he has. Being 2-0 when the Bears don't have their starting quarterback is massive and very impressive. Most coaches wouldn't be able to pull that off. They haven't missed a beat.
Going forward, the takeaway has to be that they can win no matter what they go through. That needs to be the mindset heading into Green Bay. The Bears have a great winning culture, and it continues to get better with each passing year.
